<itunes:subtitle>Exploring the connections between yoga, veganism, ahimsa, compassion and Derek's personal journey in New Orleans</itunes:subtitle>

This is destined to be a Vegan Radio classic. Derek threads the story of his move to New Orleans through interviews with his yoga teachers and recordings of the Kirtan chanting featured at the beginning of the classes. Derek has been studying Jivamukti Yoga which was founded by vegans Sharon Gannon and David Life and taught at the Swan River studios in New Orleans. The featured interview is with Libby Bryan, a vegan instructer at the school, who offers insight into the connections between veganism and yoga and the Sanskrit word Ahimsa, that means 'to do no harm'. Much of the featured Kirton is centered around the chant 'Lokah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu', which translates to 'May all beings everywhere be happy and free, and may the thoughts, words, and actions of my own life contribute in some way to that happiness and to that freedom for all.' From Derek's personal journey to the universal wisdom of yoga and compassion, this podcast captures something transcendant and beautiful, and perhaps often overlooked in the modern struggle for the liberation of animals.

Derek has moved to New Orleans and this is the first podcast produced in the Big Easy. Soon after his arrival the controversial animal rights/welfare organization Peta held a 'Meat Tray Demonstration' in downtown New Orleans. Derek went to interview the activists involved in the protest, where naked protesters were covered in faux blood and lying in containers that looked like styrofoam meat trays, wrapped in cellophane and labeled with stickers that read 'human meat'. In the second half of the show Derek interviews Peta activists on the way to a Peta protest against NASA radiation experiments on squirrel monkeys. Derek raises the abolitionist argument and gets the activists perspective on Peta's tactics

Show 87: The Veggie Brothers Cosmic Meatball

<itunes:subtitle>The Veggie Brothers faux meat will fool your Gramma</itunes:subtitle>

Show 87 was recorded on November 5th of 2009. Our feature interview is with Michael Balducci of The Veggie Brothers. We originally met at the Veggie Pride Parade. The Veggie Brothers mails delicious vegan meals made by an award-winning vegan chef all over the US and Canada, packaged in frozen vacuum-sealed bags that you can boil and serve. Michael came to veganism due to health issues and after healing himself decided he wanted to help others. His one caveat with veganism was with the bland vegan foods he was eating at the time and he wanted to ensure that vegans could eat food that was delicious. His future business partner was working as a chef at a vegan restaurant in Long Island where Michael discovered him and they founded the company soon afterword. The Veggie Bothers claim to have fooled guests at an Italian wedding with their vegan meatballs and a Jewish Grandmother with their vegan chicken noodle soup. Also in this show Scott treats us to a bunch of news stories, including Al Gore giving vegetarianism some props, a cop getting off after getting it on with a cow, a slaughterhouse getting shut down, vegan lunch at Windsor Castle, and why diet soda sucks.

<itunes:subtitle>Vegetarian Times, Vegetarian Spiders, Vegan Celebrities</itunes:subtitle>

Show 86 was recorded on October 15th of 2009. Scott is late so Derek and Megan kick it off without him. The show was broadcast concurrent to the media frenzy over Natalie Portman going vegan after reading Jonathan Saffron Foer's soon-to-be bestselling book Eating Animals, so there is some speculation about the book. Scott enters the show in time to relate the latest news stories, including a vegetarian spider, Iceland's plans for whalemeat trade, eating fish increasing risk for diabetes, and the possibility of eating meat causing sickness, paralysis and death. Our featured interview is with Jolia Allen, editor of Vegetarian Times. Derek probes into the magazine's ovo-lacto ways, Scott asks questions about the place for print media in an Internet age, and Megan delves into issues of food. Jolia is vegan and handles the crew well, avoiding Derek's attempts to stir up controversy while talking about current issues at the 35 year old magazine. When the conversation turns to Alicia Silverstone's new book 'The Kind Diet' Derek gets to tell the story of his brief phone conversation the celebrity. The show wraps up with promises of a gluten-free future.

This file is ENHANCED with images and may not play on all players. On Halloween day Derek, Megan and Scott along with several other activists took The Vegan Bus from Northampton to the 14th annual Boston Vegetarian Food Festival. Derek conducted a series of interviews that are featured on this special enhanced podcast. He talks to Dr Michael Greger about the latest in vegan nutrition and also the swine flu epdemic. Helen from the Massachusetts Animal Rights Coalition (MARC) talks about local activism and getting the vegan message into the classroom. Local farm animals sanctuaries Cloa's Ark and Maple Farm Sanctuary are interviewed, as well as local vegan clothing and sneaker producers Autonomie Project. We have a mouth watering interview with the Chicago Soy Dairy and balance that with nutritional advice from vegan bodybuilding champion and author Robert Cheeke. And while the recorder batteries died before Derek got to interview Danielle Konya of Vegan Treats he does wax poetic about their vegan donuts. Where else can you get all this fun in one podcast? Nowhere. Enjoy!

Eric is an abolitionist who subscribes to the philosophy of Gary Francione. Eric explains the difference between abolitionist and welfarist approaches to animal activism, and is a living example of how to put abolitionist ideals into action. Our guest host is Meredith Madyda who debuted on a previous unrecorded show, and will contribute again in the future. Author of the children's book 'That's Why We Don't Eat Animals' Ruby Roth is our featured guest, in a post-recorded interview. Because of technical difficulties on at the radio station we couldn't get her patched through on the phone, and so the interview with Ruby is recorded later by Derek and spliced in for this podcast. The show was quite interesting even without her, and the banter between Megan, Derek and Scott is enlightening as they cover Humane Farming Myths, the Big Bang Theory, Onions, Swiss Chard, Little Red Riding Hood, and other topics near and dear to the hearts of vegans.
Our 80th show features Beloved Binge on tour and in the studio with us for an interview and further shenanigans. The Binge are one of our favorite bands, and great vegan activists to boot. They created a documentary called Seeing Through the Fence that "explores the role of food in modern society and our connection, or lack of connection, with both the processes and animals from which our food originates". They also hand out Vegan Outreach literature at college campuses in the towns they play at.
During the second half of our show we interview Gary Lowenthal from The Worldwide Vegan Bake Sale, a global fund raising event put on by local groups around the world. Gary tells us how this great idea got off the ground and now involves dozens of groups and locations around the world. Each participating group gets to choose its venue, what to sell, and how it uses the proceeds. A great show that will leave you hungry for vegan cupcakes.

The first is Derek interviewing Billy Hulting, who helps put on the Worldfest in Encino, California. Worldfest is a solar-powered celebration of music, the environment, animals and humanity, with a strong emphasis on veganism. Billy talks about the festival, his vegan activism, and Zappa Plays Zappa, Dweezil Zappa's tribute to the music of his father Frank Zappa. Billy tours with the band as a percussionist. How cool is that? The second interview features Sarah Kramer, bestselling vegan cookbook author and artistic queen of kitch. Jilian, Scott and Derek talk to Sarah via Skype. Sarah tells us about her 2010 Wall Calendar, cookbooks, the Canadian seal hunt, vegan tattoos, kale spines, and wrestling with Isa Chandra Moskowitz. This show is riveting from start to finish, with a vegan cookie break in the middle.

Seventy-seven shows into it and the technology is still kicking our ass, but we get some interesting radio out of it just the same. We are psyched to have a chance to talk to vegan triathlete Brendan Brazier. The radio station equipment goes a little haywire and we lose Brendan early on, which gives Jilian a chance to give us a lesson on iron absorption. Once we get Brendon back we talk about his Thrive diet, the vegan sports nutrtion company he founded called Vega, his take on protein and how to fuel the body on a plant based diet.

<itunes:subtitle>Captain Paul Watson of the Sea Shepherd and studio guest Paul Saccone</itunes:subtitle>

Our 66th show is bound to go down in obscure history books as "The Vegan Paul Show". We feature an interview with one of our heroes in the movement, Captain Paul Watson of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. The interview was conducted by Derek at the 2008 Farm Sanctuary Hoe Down. Sea Shepherd is an organization committed to the eradication of pirate whaling, poaching, shark finning, unlawful habitat destruction, and violations of established laws in the World's oceans. During the last two decades Captain Watson has taken his ships out on over 160 missions to disrupt illegal whaling, the Canadian seal hunt, and dolphin slaughter in Japan. His insight into the consequences that overfishing of our oceans will have on the survival of the human species are sobering. We also have a special in-studio guest, Paul Saccone. Paul has been a fan and supporter of Vegan Radio since he found us at the Veggie Pride Parade in NYC this summer. He is himself an activist and advocate for the animals, and has been hooking us up with some great interviews and connections. We can now also say that he has a great voice for radio and insightful things to talk about. In the news find out what an egg a day, Japan's dolphin meat, the western diet being adopted in India, and frog leg pizza have in common... they all make you get sick and will probably cause you an early death. On the other hand Kale will make you see better and improve your sex appeal. So eat like you give a damn!

On our 55th show we look into two diets that are close relatives of veganism, both of which can be integrated into a vegan diet to improve the health benefits. Our first guest, David Snieckus, has been practicing a Macrobiotic diet for over 30 years and has been vegan for most of that time. While he doesn't tell us exactly what he eats we do learn a lot from him about the yin and yang underlying the lifestyle that is more than a diet. Our second guest, Nora Hamerman, has been a raw foodist for a mere 3 years and has been so inspired that she is bringing raw foods guru David Wolfe to her school, the Rhode Island School of Design. Nora illuminates her path to raw foods and vegan ethics, and tells us about creating this event for her senior project. We pay disrespects (including some fun audio clips) to former NRA president Charleton Heston who died last week, and update you on the latest costs and consequences of the recent beef recall.

<itunes:subtitle>A Veganic Farm CSA in Massachusetts and Deer in the Yard in California</itunes:subtitle>

Vegan Radio 53 features an interview with Ashley Howard who owns Heaven's Harvest Farm in New Braintree, MA. The farm is a CSA, providing portions of its harvest to people who pay for a share. The farm has always offered organic produce, but this year Ashley will be farming organically and without the use of animal manure. Since manure comes from animal agriculture it is not considered vegan. The method to be used on Heaven's Harvest Farm this year will be strictly "veganic", relying on no animal products other than what is there from local wildlife, of course! Speaking of which, the second half of our show features a pre-recorded interview with Rasa and Marlis, two vegetarians who have a web page called Deer in the Yard which documents their interactions with a family of deer in California. The deer have become good friends with Rasa and Marlis and stop by for back rubs and other fun and games.

Show 44: The Vegan Bus Burning Man Show

<itunes:subtitle>Vegan Radio takes a trip down Burning Memory Lane with the crew of the Vegan Bus tour to Black Rock City.</itunes:subtitle>

When last we met Vegan Radio co-hosts Derek, Megan and Scott, they were about to embark on a journey aboard The Vegan Bus to bring engaged veganism across the country to Burning Man. On today's show they bring three of the five other Vegan Bus travelers into the studio for a recounting of the trip. Meet Jenna Wikler, Megan E Labonte, and returning Vegan Radio guest Star Drooker. Hear about the journey which transformed a bunch of pasty vegans into hearty grease pirates, and put one omnivore on the road to vegetarianism. Our friend Kevin put a lot of volunteer work into getting the bus ready and he calls in to be on the show with us, man. We also have news of meat recalls, a vegan teacher's trials, tribulations, and litigations, and of course the ever mutating bird flu. We are so back!

Derek recorded a great interview with Darnielle where John talks about his music, his vegetarianism and his fundraising efforts for Farm Sanctuary. And of course we feature some of The Mountain Goat's music! The second half of the show features an interview with our favorite vegan nutritionist Brenda Davis. We also talk about the meaning of life in a universe where NY Times columnists are given free reign to write misleading crap. Find out what is really happening in 'Death by Veganism', the sensationalist Op-Ed journalism of Nina Planck. We bring a special guest into the studio to help us refute Planck's naive statements. Selena Dittberner has been vegan all of her 24 years, and is healthy and thriving. How did she do it?
